Types of Families and Households in the U.S. from 1970 to 2012
As you can see from the following pie chart visualizations, the percentage of households that married couples occupied has fallen since 1970, but the percent of non family households has increased over the years. Our pie chart visuals illustrate households by type from 1970 to 2012. Our visualizations also show us that most of this change or drop in percent of family households took place between 1970 and 1990.
Family households dominated in 1970, when they made up 81% of all the households during that time period. This percentage decreased significantly to around 66% by 2012.
The other family households, families whose householder was living with children or other relatives with no spouse present, are shown to have increased from 11% of households in 1970 10% Between 1970 and 2005 by our visuals.
Increases and or decreases in the percent of household type since 1990 has been significantly smaller. As of 1970, married couples with children outnumbered married couples without children but by 2012 the opposite was actually true.
From our visualizations we can conclude that in recent years the number of married couples without children has significantly increased, from 28% of households in 2000 to 29% in 2012. This change is likely related to the aging of householders, and delays in childbearing.
The most eye catching trend that our pie chart visuals show is in the decline of married-couple households with their own children, from 40% of households in 1970 to 20% in 2012.
